Kundli matching · Guide

What Guna Milan actually measures

The traditional Indian 36-point compatibility system, explained in ordinary language.

By Saswata Majumder · 12 minute read · Updated September 2026

36points

Eight small tests. One total.

Guna Milan, also called Kundli or Ashtakoota matching, uses each person’s sidereal Moon sign and birth star (nakshatra). It does not use newspaper Sun signs. That is why an accurate birth time matters.

The eight tests

The tests are not equal. Read the parts first; the total comes last.

How to read the number

Below 18 · Traditional pause

Think again after you have seen which tests failed.

18–24 · Ordinary

A large share of real marriages sit here. It is a door to continue the conversation, not a blessing.

25–32 · Good

A strong traditional score, still worth reading alongside the individual gunas.

33–36 · Excellent & uncommon

A high total is useful only when the heavy tests are also intact.

What each guna is trying to describe

Think of each score as a conversation starter, not a crystal-ball verdict.

Varna — 1 point

Strong score

Respect tends to come more easily. You may find it simpler to value each other’s choices, even when your tastes are different.

Weak score

This is a small score, so keep it light. It may mean you need a little more patience around pride, opinions, or “my way is the proper way.”

Vashya — 2 points

Strong score

Give-and-take can feel more natural. When you disagree, finding a middle path may take less effort—always a welcome guest in a home.

Weak score

You may need to be more deliberate about compromise. Talk before tiny disagreements become a competition nobody wins.

Tara — 3 points

Strong score

Traditionally, this points to a pair who can steady each other through busy or difficult seasons.

Weak score

Plan for life’s messy weeks together: rest, savings, and asking for help are useful for every couple. It is not a prediction of bad luck.

Yoni — 4 points

Strong score

Comfort, affection, and private time may feel easier to understand between you.

Weak score

Your preferred pace for affection or personal space may differ. A kind, direct conversation beats guessing—no astrology degree required.

Graha Maitri — 5 points

Strong score

The friendship of the mind is traditionally strong: conversation, humour, and advice may flow more easily.

Weak score

You may need to slow down and explain what you mean. Listen for the message behind the words instead of assuming the worst.

Gana — 6 points

Strong score

Your everyday rhythm may feel more familiar: how loudly life is lived, how quickly decisions are made, and how conflict is handled.

Weak score

You may have different emotional temperatures. One person’s “let’s discuss it” can be another person’s “please, tea first.” Name the difference and meet halfway.

Bhakoot — 7 points

Strong score

Traditionally, this supports shared direction around home, savings, family plans, and the long road together.

Weak score

This heavier score asks for extra honesty around money, family expectations, and future plans. Check the full charts and any applicable cancellation; it is not a forecast of loss.

Nadi — 8 points

Strong score

Traditionally, a strong Nadi result is reassuring for long-term stamina together and the children theme.

Weak score

This heavier score deserves a careful look at birth details and cancellation rules. It is a symbolic tradition—not a medical test, and never a verdict on a relationship.

How the points are added

  1. 1Start with both people’s birth date, time, and place.
  2. 2Find each person’s sidereal Moon sign and birth star (nakshatra).
  3. 3Score all eight gunas, then add the points for a total out of 36.
  4. 4Read the individual lines—especially Nadi and Bhakoot—before celebrating, worrying, or ordering extra mithai.

What this score cannot do

  • It cannot see Manglik dosha, the seventh house, Venus, or Navamsa.
  • It cannot time a wedding or measure kindness, consent, or whether two families can sit in one room.
  • It cannot be treated as a medical or fertility test.

Nadi carries the largest share of the total, so it helps to understand its score before you rely on the final number.
